The pituitary receives signals from the brain through the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) releasing hormone (TRH), which instructs the thyroid gland to generate more or less T3 and T4 by increasing or reducing the production of the hormone TSH (TSH). The pituitary gland produces more TSH to instruct the thyroid gland to generate more thyroid hormones when blood levels of T3 and T4 are low. High T3 and T4 levels cause the pituitary gland to release less TSH to the thyroid gland, which slows the hormones' synthesis.
